Five-Year Integrated M. Sc. Programme in Physics
Physics applies scientific methodologies to understand the most fundamental principles of nature: matter and energy, and how they interact. Energy can take the form of mechanical energy, light energy, electrical energy, radiation energy and sound energy. Physics deals with matter on scales ranging from sub-atomic to stars and even entire galaxies. In this sense, Physics answers questions about universe and the way elements of universe interact to compose natural phenomena. As well as being concerned with deep fundamental questions, physics forms the basis of most present and future technology like computers, cell phones, lasers and the internet.
The Integrated M. Sc. Physics Programme at CUTN aims to train the students in high level theoretical knowledge enabling them to tackle practical complex problems in industrial fields as well as to pursue further academic achievements through research. Since Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences are fundamental courses in sciences, students will be taught a mix of all these four subjects during the first two years. All these four departments in CUTN are well-equipped to offer hands-on training in state-of-the-art experiments. After successful completion of fundamental courses, a student will take up core courses in physics. In addition to the core physics subjects, the students can acquire additional expertise in special area of physics in the final year. During this period, all possible opportunities will be created for close interaction with research institutes and industries so as to provide high level training. Thus the main objective of this program is to prepare the younger generation to cope with the emerging scenario in the top level industries, academic and research institutions.
PhD in Chemistry
The doctoral degree in Chemistry at CUTN is an exciting research program with components of course works and advanced research. Presently the department is seeking enthusiastic research scholars to work in frontier areas of chemistry such as supramolecular chemistry, organic electronic materials and medicinal chemistry. Experts are also available in bioinorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry and materials chemistry.
Five-Year Integrated M. Sc. Programme in Chemistry
Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. It is clear that an understanding of the fundamentals of this subject is essential to finding solutions for many of the challenges facing humankind today such as, water purification, environmental remediation, development of environmentally benign chemical processes and novel materials for sequestering solar energy and storage. It also encompasses to unraveling molecular mechanisms for disease and the development of new molecules for their cure. The study of chemistry will provide students with the requisite fundamental knowledge base to begin research in many of these interdisciplinary areas that straddle conventional disciplines such as physics, biology and engineering.
The five-year Integrated M. Sc. in chemistry intends to provide a rich mix of fundamental courses in all the sciences, namely chemistry, physics and mathematics during the first four semesters. This combination, we believe, will enable the students to pursue advanced degrees in emerging interdisciplinary areas in which major strides are expected in the coming decades. After the successful completion of the first four semesters, students majoring in chemistry will be required to take a fixed number of compulsory chemistry core courses that will enable them to pursue studies in various specialized areas. Students can then specialize even more by choosing elective courses from a wide range of special topics that will enable them to fulfill their minimum requirements for majoring chemistry. The course structure is designed to impart the requisite theoretical background in addition to providing strong hands-on laboratory training in modern and more contextual chemistry topics. An important feature of the programme is to provide students with the opportunity to carry out research projects on a wide range of contemporary topics within chemical sciences division. This will provide an ideal environment for translating class-room learning to cutting-edge research applications.
Successfully completing the Integrated M. Sc. programme in chemistry will help the students to either embark on a career in chemistry or to pursue advanced degrees in chemistry and allied interdisciplinary areas. The strong laboratory programme exposure to modern instrumentation and the research training will be of immense value to students to pursue a PhD programme directly. The opportunity to engage in an intense one-semester research project in a creative and exciting environment will enable students to make intelligent career choices, specifically with regard to a research career. In the end of the fifth year a campus interview also will be arranged by inviting reputed industries all over the country.
Five-Year Integrated M. Sc. Programme in Life Sciences
The Life Sciences landscape today is marked by complexity
and change, thinning new drug discovery, patents, generics and competitiveness.
In today’s fast developing technology growing industrialization and
modernization, Life Sciences hold a prominent place as few professions do. Life
sciences are and will continue to remain one of the prospective professions.
Life Science student require special kind of interest and aptitude to be
successful. Commercial potential of Life Sciences is immense, since the scope
of its activities covers the entire spectrum of human life and it draws on the
capabilities and resources of the entire biological world and even beyond. Life
Science is an important thrust area in Science and Technology. Five-year integrated program in Life Sciences at CUTN is an interdisciplinary Science that relies on Biology. Students will successfully learn fundamentals of Life Science, and other subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry during the first two years. From third year onwards, frontier areas such as Neurobiology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and computational biology, Immunology, Developmental Biology, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Animal Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Ecology, Biodiversity, Biology of Human Diseases, History and Philosophy of Science, Plant Biology, Cell Biology, and Microbiology will be introduced. At their final semester, students will be given a project by that they can have collaboration with both industry and reputed institutes across India. Manned by a pool of skilled professors, students will be trained on how to design experiments, data analysis and writing a manuscript. Their project work will be published in reputed journals in the field, by that they can avail international research opportunities at ease. Students will be motivated and guided for higher studies. They will also be informed about the competitive exams in their field of study. At the end when a Life Science student winds up the degree, the student’s capabilities and experience will span across in all verticals. The main objective of the course is to train Life Science students in theory as well as hands on experience in state-of-art techniques so at the end they will be invincible in this fast developing competitive global scenario. |
